This week’s Member Spotlight is focused on Miss Heather Dee who is the State Leader of our Arizona chapter. Miss Heather has been with Pinups for Patriots for a couple years now and has been doing wonderful things for our Arizona chapter. We are grateful for her ongoing efforts as a State Leader and for sharing her story with us.
Q1: What made you decide to join PFP?
A1: I moved to a small town in Arizona from Orange County, California and I was missing the pinup scene greatly, along with all of my friends. Living in a small town and finding like minded people was difficult for me. I ran across PFP website and being a Marine brat and from a long line of military family members I thought what a great fit. I applied and Jessa called me for my interview and I practically giggled with excitement, now the rest is history.
A2: I love going to events and helping the veterans, whether it’s with a smile, thanking them for their service, or raising money to help them. They have done so much for us and are so often forgotten and left to deal with their issues all by themselves. I just attended a wreath laying ceremony and shared my story and it was hard to fight back the tears of pride for all the men and women who have helped this country.
Q3: What has been your favorite Pinups for Patriots event that you have attended and why?
A3: My favorite event was my most recent, Spirit of ’45 Wreath Laying Ceremony in Prescott, Arizona. The cemetery was awe-inspiring with all the flags on display, honor guard surrounding the memorial, and service men and women both past and present in attendance. Having several family members serve during WWII and have passed away since it meant so much to me to share their story and support the veterans both here and gone. I caught myself several times wiping away the tears from my eyes.
Q4: How has being a volunteer impacted your life?
A4: I am normally a shy person by nature and don’t make friends easily. But being a part of this group I have found so many like minded women who share my passion and patriotism. I feel like I have found a place where I belong that is filled with lifelong friends. They may not be in the same city, or even same state but we support each other no matter what.
Q5: What advice do you have for anyone considering joining Pinups for Patriots?
A5: My advice would be to apply as soon as possible. You may not be able to go to every event and they might be a bit of a distance to travel to sometimes but they are well worth it. Bringing smiles to people’s faces and raising money to help our veterans gives you such an overwhelming feeling of joy. I actually feel kind of selfish since I am now addicted to this high that is Pinup for Patriots.
Q6: Who is your ‘Pinup’ inspiration?
A6: My pinup inspiration is my Grandmother Edithe Bonanomi. She passed away a few years ago but she was the strongest women I have ever met. She fought breast cancer and survived all while her husband was dying in the hospital, raised three teenagers all by herself, and never stopped loving life and people. I wish she was around to see what she has inspired me to do.
Q7: Do you have any family members that are veterans or are you a veteran?
A7: My father is a Marine [because you never stop being a Marine] who served during the Vietnam War. My paternal grandparents both served during WWII, and my maternal grandfather served during WWII and my grandmother was a messenger on Long Beach Naval Base. I can actually trace my military routes all the way back to the Revolutionary War.
Q8: What do you enjoy the most about the pinup style?
A8: I love how the pinup style makes me feel. As a mother of two I feel I am a little past my short skirts and revealing tops but I can still feel amazingly beautiful and attractive in vintage dresses and hair without showing too much. It also makes me feel like a strong woman who can accomplish anything. And I can’t wait for my daughter to be old enough that I can share this passion with her.
